Herbs are plants high in nutrition value including protective combinations of polyphenol plant compounds with potent anti-inflammatory properties. Herbs are aromatic plants with a savory essence used to garnish or flavor food. When consumed for dietary micronutrients, some plants have photochemical compounds that have effects on the body often consumed to improve nutrition. Herbs were used in ancient times for medicinal use dating back to 5000 BCE for prehistoric medicine for herbal remedies.

Modern pharmaceuticals herbs are used as the foundation as crude herbal medicine to this day drugs are still extracted from raw herbs then purified to meet quality pharmaceutical standards,  Creating new medications using phytochemicals delivered from herbs have been shown to decrease inflammation lower the risks associated with some disorders including autoimmune diseases, and cardiovascular disease, The herb turmeric has scientifically proven health benefits to help prevent heart disease, lower inflammation it has potent antioxidant properties may reduce symptoms of arthritis and depression.

Rosemary is often added to savory dishes for additional aromatic seasoning also known as a symbol of fertility. Cooking with herbs is considered safe when consumed in moderation however eating large amounts of herbs may cause toxic overload and may cause serious complications and should be used with caution.  Complications may arise when being taken with some medications.  Herbs are generally safe to consume in food.

Cooking With Herbs

Culinary herbs used in cooking are distinguished from vegetables and are used in small amounts to flavor foods without adding additional calories.  Reducing salt intake can make a huge difference in your weight reducing fluid retention helps your body rid itself of water weight.  Herbs have been used for thousands of years adding flavorful seasoning to many delicious meals. Flavoring savory recipes with fresh herbs is a nutritious way to spice up any dish without adding extra calories. 

When cooking with herbs add them to the dish at the end of the cooking time maintaining the intensity of flavor, delicate flavors will not be lost during food preparation. Spices and dried herbs can withstand longer cooking time without losing flavor. Fresh herbs have become more readily available in most local grocery stores usually found in the produce section.  

Growing herbs in a garden or using small containers is another way to have fresh ingredients on hand for any recipe. Freeze fresh herbs in ice cube trays for preserving. Remove the frozen herbs from the tray and place the herbs in a freezer zip lock bag to store in the freezer for future use in recipes. Wrap fresh herbs in a paper towel then place it in a ziplock plastic bag to refrigerate.  

Store dried herbs, spices in airtight containers in a dark, cool location to preserved aromas and flavorings.  Herbs can be infused in boiling water to create herbal teas used for medicinal purposes.  Create a new unique blend of tea designed to promote sleep. wellness, or relaxation depending on the herbal tea of choice.
